About Cowboy Action Shooting

Cowboy Action Shooting is a shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single action revolvers, a pistol caliber lever action rifle, and a side-by-side double barreled, pre-1899 pump, or a lever action shotgun. The shooting competition is staged in a unique, in character, Old West style.

Contestants shoot in four firearm stages (courses of fire) in which they engage steel targets in a specifically designed scenario and shooting sequence. The use of vintage firearms, authentic looking costuming, unique targets, and fast action make Cowboy Action Shooting one of the most interesting of all shooting sports for both spectator and contestant.

Match stages are set up in several shooting bays at 8:30 AM the morning of the match. A safety meeting starts at 9:30 AM, and the match begins soon thereafter. You MUST be present for the safety meeting to participate in the matches.

The shooting Fee is $15, however if you help us set up or tear down the stages you can shoot for $10. (First-time shooters always shoot free).

You DO NOT have to be a member of SASS to shoot at our matches. Neither the Bigfork Buscaderos nor the Bigfork Gun Club is affiliated with SASS (Single Action Shooting Society), although all SASS rules apply.

Even if you have never shot Cowboy Action before you should come to one of our matches. We will be happy to "show you the ropes" and ensure you shoot safely.
